Trump Links Higher US Gas Prices to Ukraine Strikes, Refinery Closures

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump on Monday attributed rising gasoline prices in the United States to Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy facilities and refinery shutdowns in states led by Democrats.

"What's driving up gasoline is no longer the Strait of Hormuz, because record numbers of barrels are coming out now on an almost daily basis," Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.

He said higher prices at the pump were connected to Russian facilities "are being blown up by Ukraine, and where ours are being closed up, in blue (Democratic-led) states, like California."

Trump had previously urged Kyiv to avoid targeting petroleum infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, however, recently said Ukraine planned to step up attacks on Russian oil refineries as part of its response to Russian strikes against Ukrainian military-industrial and infrastructure targets.

Gasoline prices in the US have continued to rise. The national average for regular gasoline is currently $4.37 per gallon, up from $4.15 a month earlier and $3.13 during the same period last year, according to American Automobile Association data.

Russia also extended a temporary ban on exports of diesel and marine fuel, along with gasoil, by direct producers through Oct. 31.

Meanwhile, G7 leaders agreed Friday to begin an immediate coordinated release of 100 million barrels from emergency oil reserves over four months as prices climb and volatility increases across global energy markets.
