Indonesia Strengthens Border Health Checks After Suspected Plague-Linked Death

(MENAFN) Indonesia has increased health surveillance at international entry points following reports that a laboratory worker in Russia died from pneumonia suspected of being associated with plague, according to reports.

Indonesian health authorities are monitoring the situation while strengthening preparedness measures at airports and seaports, particularly at international points of entry.

Aji Muhawarman, head of the Health Ministry’s Bureau of Communication and Public Information, said authorities were following developments closely. He noted that Indonesia had not received any notification through the International Health Regulations National Focal Point or the World Health Organization’s Event Information Site calling for specific measures or heightened vigilance.

Despite the absence of an international alert, Indonesian authorities have increased monitoring procedures, including at international airports and seaports in Bali.

The measures include requiring travelers to complete health declarations through the SATUSEHAT Health Pass system and monitoring passengers for possible symptoms of infectious diseases.

Authorities are also conducting risk-based assessments of incoming vessels while increasing surveillance of rodents and fleas, which can play a role in the transmission of plague.

Travelers displaying symptoms such as fever, coughing or difficulty breathing may be referred to designated infectious disease hospitals, where they can be isolated and receive medical treatment if necessary.

The heightened surveillance follows the death of a 28-year-old employee at Russia’s Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Siberia.

Russian authorities said the employee died from “pneumonia of unknown etiology.” Testing reportedly found no microorganisms associated with her professional activities, while investigations into the circumstances of her illness continue.

Nearly 200 people who had contact with the woman have reportedly been placed under medical observation as Russian authorities continue assessing the case.

Indonesia’s measures are aimed at strengthening early detection at international borders while authorities monitor developments and await further information regarding the cause of the death.
