Channel Crossing Attempt Ends in Migrant Deaths Off Northern France
French authorities spotted the vessel leaving the dunes near Berck shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday (2000GMT). It was subsequently intercepted roughly 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from the coast near Merlimont.
Sea rescue teams found the boat severely overcrowded and brought two women back to shore for medical attention.
One woman sustained serious burns to her legs after coming into contact with a mixture of fuel and seawater, while the second experienced breathing difficulties.
Rescuers also removed two men from the vessel after finding them in cardiac arrest. Despite efforts to revive them, both men died and were pronounced dead around midnight.
The two women, who were both Somali nationals, were transported to a hospital in Rang-du-Fliers. One of them was later reportedly flown by helicopter to Lille for further treatment.
Meanwhile, the daughter of one of the women, a girl believed to be around 10 years old, was found safe after reaching the shore with other migrants.
