London Power Outage Disrupts Homes, Businesses, Rail Services
The disruption began at around 10.32 am (0932GMT) and affected approximately 32 postcodes, mainly in eastern areas of the capital, according to UK Power Networks (UKPN).
The company, which manages electricity networks across London, southeast England and eastern England, said the outage resulted from a problem within the local underground network.
The loss of power caused disruptions for businesses and public transport. Departure boards at London Liverpool Street station stopped functioning, while a number of shops and offices lost electricity. Some workplaces also experienced problems after Wi-Fi connections were interrupted and computer screens shut down.
Rail services were affected as well. Trains on the Great Northern line were unable to call at Essex Road station after lighting on the platform was lost. Passengers were advised to use Old Street or Highbury and Islington instead and allow additional time for their journeys.
UKPN said it redirected electricity supplies and restored power to 4,989 homes and businesses roughly 15 minutes after the outage began.
Electricity was subsequently returned to the remaining affected areas, with service fully restored across all impacted postcodes by the afternoon.
No additional information was provided regarding the specific cause of the underground network failure.
