Russia Ukraine Exchange Claims Over Deadly Overnight Drone Strikes
Moscow Region Gov. Andrey Vorobyov said Russian air defenses intercepted 185 drones across 16 municipalities during the overnight attack.
“Preliminary reports indicate six injuries. … Tragically, there was a fatality. A 20-year-old man died in the settlement of Radumlya (Solnechnogorsky District) as a result of the attack,” Vorobyov said.
The governor later revised the figures, reporting that two people had been killed and nine others injured. He said the attack was among the largest drone assaults on the region and caused damage to 47 private homes across seven municipalities.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin separately said 650 drones had approached the Moscow region between 8.30 p.m. Monday and 5 a.m. Tuesday. According to his account, 105 drones were destroyed while approaching the capital.
Sobyanin later said Russian forces had intercepted another 29 drones heading toward Moscow, adding to the scale of the reported overnight assault.
Other Russian regions also reported casualties and damage. One person was injured in the Smolensk region, while two others sustained injuries in Bryansk, a region bordering Ukraine, during overnight strikes.
Ukraine also reported casualties following Russian attacks. Mykhailo Semikin, acting head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, said at least five people were injured when a residential building in the regional capital was struck overnight.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said 11 additional people were rescued from the damaged apartment building in Zaporizhzhia. Emergency crews subsequently completed search and rescue operations at the site.
In Kyiv, emergency responders dealt with a fire that broke out on the roof of an educational institution in the Obolonskyi district following a Russian strike in the morning. The fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported.
Odesa Governor Oleh Kiper said another Russian overnight attack damaged a building belonging to a private company in the regional capital. The strike sparked a fire, which emergency crews quickly brought under control.
“There were no casualties. Cleanup operations are currently underway at the site,” Kiper said.
Neither the Russian nor Ukrainian authorities had immediately responded to the other side’s claims regarding the overnight attacks. Independent confirmation of the reported number of drones, interceptions, casualties and damage remains difficult because of the ongoing conflict.
The latest exchanges come amid a broader increase in Russian and Ukrainian strikes in recent months. Both sides have increasingly targeted logistics facilities, ports and energy infrastructure as the war continues.
Moscow and Kyiv have repeatedly denied intentionally targeting civilian infrastructure. Each side maintains that its military operations are directed at military targets or facilities considered to support military activities.
The continued drone attacks highlight the expanding geographic reach of the conflict, with strikes affecting areas far from the immediate front lines while causing casualties and damage among civilian communities.
