Trump Signals Uncertainty Over Extending North American Trade Pact

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he is not currently inclined to renew the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), the trade deal that took effect during his first term in office.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump noted that a built-in review and renewal provision was a key reason he backed replacing the North American Free Trade Agreement with the newer accord.

He again criticized NAFTA, calling it “the worst trade deal” ever signed by the United States, while arguing that the USMCA represented a significant improvement because it allows Washington to reassess its participation after a set period.

“After six years, it comes up for renewal. I don’t know that I’m going to renew it,” he said.

The USMCA entered into force in July 2020, replacing NAFTA and establishing a formal review process scheduled for 2026. Under that mechanism, the United States, Canada, and Mexico are expected to evaluate the agreement and determine whether it should continue.

Trump also argued that the United States is less dependent on imports from its two neighboring trading partners than they are on access to the American market, maintaining that Canada and Mexico benefit more from the arrangement than Washington does.
