ICC Suspends Chief Prosecutor Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations
In a statement, the court said Khan was removed from active duty with immediate effect while awaiting a final decision by the Assembly of States Parties. The suspension follows findings and recommendations reviewed from the UN Office of Internal Oversight Services, along with supporting evidence, written submissions, and advice from an independent panel of experts, according to reports.
Although the ICC said detailed documents would remain confidential, reports citing diplomatic sources indicated that the court’s executive bureau concluded that Khan committed “serious misconduct” and recommended his removal from office. Khan had previously taken voluntary leave last year while the investigation proceeded.
The allegations first surfaced in 2024, when he was accused of coercing a female aide into a sexual relationship. Khan has denied all wrongdoing, according to reports.
Further reporting cited UN investigators as having found indications of “non-consensual sexual contact” involving a staff member, although initial judicial assessments reportedly concluded that the evidence did not meet the “beyond a reasonable doubt” threshold. The investigation later continued with additional evidence submissions from both sides, according to reports.
