Iraq Advances Plan to Integrate Armed Groups Into State Security Structures

(MENAFN) Iraqi authorities have taken another step in their effort to bring armed factions under direct state oversight, with a government committee receiving personnel and military asset records from the Imam Ali Brigades.

According to a statement issued Wednesday, the committee responsible for separating armed groups from the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) and incorporating them into official security institutions has obtained detailed documentation covering the brigade’s members, weapons, equipment, and vehicles.

The process is part of a broader government initiative being implemented under a program approved by Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi and backed by parliament.

Reports indicated that Lt. Gen. Qais al-Muhammadawi, who heads the committee, oversaw the transfer of the records and inventories during a meeting attended by both committee representatives and leaders of the Imam Ali Brigades.

Officials said the handover is intended to facilitate the next stages of restructuring and integration, ultimately leading to the dissolution of separate organizational identities and independent military formations.

According to the statement, the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts “to strengthen stability, reinforce the rule of law and ensure that weapons and armed formations remain under the authority of the state and official security institutions.”

Earlier this month, Iraqi military authorities announced the launch of the committee tasked with ensuring that all weapons remain under state control. The body was established to develop procedures for integrating eligible formations into the country's security apparatus and to oversee the transfer of military assets, including weapons, equipment, and camps, to official institutions.

Officials have also emphasized that the restructuring process is intended to protect the rights and interests of members of the affected groups while reorganizing them within state frameworks.

The latest development follows a similar announcement last week by Asaib Ahl al-Haq, one of Iraq’s most influential Shiite political and armed organizations. The group stated that it would establish its own committee to begin separating from the PMF structure and transferring its weapons to state authority.

The government’s broader objective is to consolidate armed capabilities under a unified national command while reducing the presence of independently organized military formations operating outside official security institutions.
