Israeli Navy Intercepts Gaza-Bound Aid Flotilla

(MENAFN) Israeli forces intercepted and seized dozens of vessels from the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian convoy attempting to reach Gaza by sea, according to statements released by the organizers.

The flotilla, which departed from Türkiye last week, reportedly included 51 boats carrying more than 420 activists from dozens of countries. Organizers said the mission aimed to challenge the long-standing Israeli naval blockade imposed on Gaza and deliver humanitarian assistance to the enclave.

In statements shared online, organizers said Israeli military vessels intercepted the convoy during daylight hours and began boarding several ships. They later alleged that Israeli forces had taken control of many of the boats and detained volunteers participating in the mission.

Among those reportedly detained was Irish doctor Margaret Connolly, identified by organizers as the sister of Irish President Catherine Connolly.

Reports indicated that the interception occurred roughly 250 nautical miles from Gaza, near the waters off Cyprus. Cypriot authorities reportedly said the operation took place outside the country’s territorial waters. Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides also stated that Israeli authorities had not notified Nicosia in advance about the operation.

Israel has maintained a naval blockade on Gaza for years, describing it as a security measure aimed at preventing weapons transfers to militant groups in the territory. Humanitarian organizations and activists, meanwhile, have repeatedly criticized the restrictions, arguing that they severely impact civilians and humanitarian access.
