Iraq Condemns Drone Attack on US Embassy as ‘Terrorist Assault’

(MENAFN) Iraq has denounced a drone attack targeting the US Embassy in Baghdad, describing the incident as a “terrorist assault” on the country’s sovereignty and labeling it a criminal act, according to reports.

In a statement issued through the media office of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani and shared on the social media platform X, the government said the embassy compound in the capital had been targeted by outlawed groups.

Al-Sudani, who also serves as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, instructed security and investigative bodies to track down those responsible for the attack and ensure they are brought to justice, as stated by reports.

The statement further warned that attacks on diplomatic missions represent a serious breach of international agreements and diplomatic norms, adding that such incidents could place Iraq in a difficult position with the international community.

According to reports, the attack involved three drones carrying explosives and occurred earlier Tuesday near the US Embassy complex in Baghdad.

Air defense systems at the compound reportedly intercepted and destroyed two of the drones, while the third struck a wall of the embassy grounds, triggering a fire in the surrounding area.

Authorities emphasized that the government will not allow any group to destabilize security in Baghdad or other cities, or to use weapons outside the control of the state, according to reports.

The incident took place amid escalating regional conflict following the launch of a joint US-Israeli military campaign against Iran in late February. Reports estimate that around 1,300 people have been killed so far, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Iran has responded with drone and missile attacks aimed at Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and several Gulf nations hosting US military facilities. These exchanges have led to casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions affecting global markets and aviation, according to reports.
