Trump Says Iran Conflict Will End “Soon,” Not This Week
"We're going to have a much safer world when it's wrapped up. It'll be wrapped up soon," Trump added, explaining that he felt he had "an obligation" to act, despite personal hesitation.
Trump asserted that without US strikes, a nuclear conflict could have erupted, potentially spiraling into World War III, presenting the military actions as a necessary response rather than a discretionary war.
The comments underscore the administration’s inconsistent messaging regarding the campaign’s expected timeline. Initially, Trump suggested the operation would last four to five weeks and has frequently claimed it is proceeding "ahead of schedule."
Energy Secretary Chris Wright indicated on Sunday that the campaign would "certainly" conclude within weeks. Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated last week it was "only just the beginning," as reported by multiple sources, with officials in Washington and allied capitals reportedly anticipating US engagement could continue through September.
The US-Israeli military actions against Iran commenced on February 28 and are reported to have resulted in over 1,200 fatalities, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Additionally, fourteen US service members have died since the onset of the operations.
