Croatia Halts Military Ties with Israel Over Alleged Legal Violations

(MENAFN) Croatia’s president announced on Monday that he has suspended all military collaboration between the Croatian Armed Forces (OSRH) and the Israeli army, citing what he called violations of international humanitarian law by Israel.

In a social media statement, Zoran Milanovic explained that “because of the unacceptable conduct of the Israeli army and the unprecedented violation of all norms of international humanitarian law,” he had already instructed in May of last year “the termination of all cooperation between the OSRH and the Israeli army,” which applies to every member of Croatia’s military.

He also noted that he had urged the Croatian government “to halt any form of trade in weapons and military equipment with Israel.”

Milanovic added that during a recent phone conversation, he personally informed Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic that “any form of military cooperation with Israel would be unacceptable.”

Commenting on Defense Minister Ivan Anusic’s official visit to Israel on Monday—where he was scheduled to meet with representatives of Israeli defense companies and officials from the Directorate for International Defense Cooperation in the Israel Ministry of Defense—Milanovic emphasized that, as commander-in-chief of the OSRH, he reaffirms that “the OSRH will not cooperate with the Israeli army in any way, now or in the future.”

He further stressed that, to safeguard Croatia, members of the OSRH “will not participate in any way in the implementation of any agreement, contract or arrangement with the Israeli army or the Israeli defense industry.” Such agreements, he said, “would therefore be unenforceable and harmful for Croatia.”
