Putin Vows Commitment to Expand Russia’s Strategic Nuclear Forces
In a video message delivered Monday to mark Defender of the Fatherland Day, Putin commended Russian service members for their role in safeguarding state sovereignty, particularly in the context of the continuing military campaign against Kiev. He emphasized that lessons drawn from the Ukraine conflict would be used to further reinforce both the army and the navy.
According to his remarks, Russia intends to enhance operational readiness across all branches of its military, drawing on advancements from domestic scientific research and high-technology sectors.
“The development of the nuclear triad, which guarantees Russia’s security and enables us to effectively ensure strategic deterrence and balance of power in the world, remains our unconditional priority,” he said.
His comments came shortly after the expiration of the New START Treaty, the final remaining bilateral nuclear arms control agreement between Moscow and Washington. The accord, signed in 2010, placed a ceiling of 1,550 deployed strategic nuclear warheads on no more than 700 delivery systems for each side and mandated periodic on-site inspections to verify compliance.
Despite the lapse of the agreement, Russian officials have indicated that Moscow does not intend to escalate tensions unilaterally. They have stated that Russia will refrain from increasing its nuclear warhead count, provided that the United States adopts a similar stance. In this context, Moscow has stressed it will not be “the first to take steps towards escalation.”
The treaty’s expiration followed signals from the administration of US President Donald Trump that any future arms control framework should also incorporate China. Beijing has rejected that proposal, calling it “neither fair nor reasonable,” and arguing that its nuclear capabilities are significantly smaller than those of both Russia and the United States.
