Syrian Forces Seize Control of Key al-Tanf Base

(MENAFN) Syrian forces have seized control of the strategically vital al-Tanf military installation positioned at the tri-border convergence point of Syria, Iraq, and Jordan following American military departure after nearly a decade of occupation.

Government officials in Damascus confirmed to a news agency Wednesday that the Syrian Army has secured the facility and stationed personnel at the location.

US military forces relocated to an outpost designated Tower 22, positioned within the demilitarized buffer zone along the Jordan-Syria frontier, approximately 22 kilometers (13 miles) from al-Tanf, according to reports.

While estimates indicate roughly 200 American service members were previously garrisoned at al-Tanf during peak deployment, official figures regarding current troop levels at Tower 22 remain unconfirmed.

Washington had utilized the al-Tanf installation—which underwent significant expansion operations during 2017 and 2018—as a surveillance hub, deploying high-altitude monitoring balloons to track movements of Iran-backed militant factions and ISIS (Daesh) terrorist operatives throughout an extensive corridor spanning hundreds of kilometers from the Jordanian frontier to the Euphrates River.
