US Defense Chief announces plan to boost military AI use
"Today, at my direction, we're executing an AI acceleration strategy that will extend our lead in military AI established during President (Donald) Trump's first term," Hegseth said during a visit to Elon Musk’s SpaceX facility in Brownsville, Texas, part of the nationwide Arsenal of Freedom tour.
Hegseth described the plan as a means to “unleash experimentation, eliminate bureaucratic barriers, focus on investments and demonstrate the execution approach needed to ensure we lead in military AI and that it grows more dominant into the future.” He stressed that AI will play a central role in all military operations, from logistics and planning to intelligence and combat activities.
"We will win this race by becoming an AI, first warfighting force across all domains," he added.
The defense chief also emphasized US capabilities to deter adversaries like Iran, asserting that rivals have miscalculated American strength. "Before this administration, our adversaries may have thought they finally broke American power. They're wrong," Hegseth said. He cited the US military’s operational experience, access to classified technologies, and ability to project force swiftly as key advantages.
His comments coincide with rising tensions in Iran, where President Trump has indicated potential military action in response to nationwide protests, warning Tehran it is approaching a red line.
