Australian Premier Labels Sydney Shooting “Act of Evil Anti-Semitism”
The Sunday attack was carried out by two gunmen who specifically targeted the ‘Hanukkah by the Sea’ festivities. One of the suspected assailants was killed during a gunfight with police, while the other was apprehended and remains in critical condition.
Authorities are treating the shooting as a “terrorist incident.” Several “suspicious devices,” believed to be improvised explosive devices, were discovered in a vehicle linked to the attackers, parked close to the beach.
Prime Minister Albanese condemned the atrocity and vowed to eliminate “hate, violence, and terrorism in our nation.” He stated, “There has been a devastating terrorist incident at Bondi at the Hanukkah By the Sea celebration. This is a targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah, which should be a day of joy, a celebration of faith. [The attack is] an act of evil anti-Semitism, terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation.”
During the assault, a bystander reportedly confronted one of the gunmen, wresting his firearm away, according to videos circulating online. The disarmed assailant returned to his partner and appears to have retrieved a secondary weapon. The bystander sustained at least two gunshot injuries while attempting to escape.
Local media outlets identified the courageous individual as a 43-year-old fruit shop owner and a member of the local Muslim community. He is currently hospitalized with injuries that are not life-threatening.
