Japanese PM urges UN to undergo sweeping reforms
(MENAFN) On Tuesday, Japan’s outgoing Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba underscored that international peace and stability do not sustain themselves automatically but require constant safeguarding. He pressed for sweeping reforms of the UN Security Council, stressing that its framework—shaped by the aftermath of World War II—has become increasingly ineffective in dealing with modern-day threats, according to reports.
Ishiba highlighted that under the UN Charter, the Council carries the chief duty of preserving global security. This includes authorizing peacekeeping missions and upholding nations’ rights to self-defense. However, he argued that the special veto authority of the five permanent members has repeatedly obstructed decisive action in urgent crises.
"Russia's aggression against Ukraine is the most obvious example where a permanent member of the Security Council with a special responsibility for international peace and security has invaded its neighbor. This shakes the very foundation of the international order in which Security Council resolutions are vetoed and not adopted, and General Assembly resolutions calling on Russia to withdraw immediately are adopted but not implemented," he said.
Pointing to the need for both fairness and broader representation, Ishiba urged that the Security Council expand its composition by adding more permanent and non-permanent seats, according to his address.
