Kremlin Accuses UK of Prolonging Ukraine War

(MENAFN) The Kremlin has sharply criticized Britain as a primary advocate for prolonging the Ukraine conflict and thwarting a potential peace settlement negotiated by the U.S.. In comments made on Sunday, spokesperson Dmitry Peskov accused the UK of being a leader in a "pro-war" coalition, working against efforts to de-escalate tensions.

"The United Kingdom is one of the leaders of this pro-war camp," Peskov stated in a TV interview, likely referring to the so-called “coalition of the willing,” which includes nations like France, Canada, Poland, and others that have been actively supplying Ukraine with arms, funds, and diplomatic support.

Peskov’s remarks follow a recent visit by U.S. President Donald Trump to London, where British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called for intensified pressure on Russia. The Kremlin spokesperson also claimed that Trump was briefed on the UK’s plans to keep ramping up sanctions and other measures against Russia, which Peskov dismissed as "illegal" and ineffective in resolving the ongoing conflict. He stressed that both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump remain open to pursuing a peaceful resolution, in contrast to the UK's stance.

Since the conflict began in February 2022, Britain has remained one of Ukraine’s strongest backers. This month, the UK imposed a fresh wave of sanctions targeting Russia's economy, including penalties on over two dozen companies and restrictions on more than a hundred oil tankers from what Western nations refer to as Moscow's “shadow fleet.”

Additionally, the UK and its Western allies have provided Ukraine with long-range cruise missiles and lifted prior restrictions on their use, even against targets within Russian territory. Moscow has condemned this development, describing it as a dangerous escalation and accusing Western nations of becoming directly complicit in the war.

Reports have also surfaced suggesting that former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson played a key role in derailing early peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in 2022. According to these reports, Johnson opposed a proposed settlement and urged Kiev to pursue a military path instead.
