Qatar Pushes for Revised Defense Deal with US

(MENAFN) Qatar announced Tuesday that last week’s Israeli bombardment on Doha underscores the urgency for a renewed strategic defense accord with the United States.

“Yes, this attack accelerates the need for an updated strategic defense agreement between the US and Qatar,” stated Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari during a press briefing in Doha.

“This is not new in itself, but rather an acceleration of the process.”

Back in June 1992, Qatar inked a defense cooperation treaty with Washington.

Earlier Tuesday, Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani conducted discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who had traveled to Doha after his stop in Israel.

According to a declaration from the Emiri Diwan, the dialogue reviewed the bilateral strategic ties and examined methods to enhance them, especially in the area of defense.

Rubio, on his side, reiterated Washington’s defense alliance with Qatar.

“We reaffirmed the enduring US-Qatar security partnership and our shared commitment to a safer, more stable region," he posted on the US social networking platform X.

The senior diplomat also expressed appreciation to Qatar "for its ongoing mediation efforts to broker a peace deal between Israel and Hamas and to bring the hostages home."
