Powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake hits Russia

(MENAFN) A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Russia’s far eastern region at 6:37 a.m. local time Saturday (0237 GMT), the United States Geological Survey reported.

The epicenter was located off the coast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative center of Kamchatka Krai, at a depth of 39.5 kilometers (24.5 miles). The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned that “hazardous” waves could affect coasts within 300 kilometers (186 miles) of the epicenter.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is home to Russia’s Rybachiy submarine base and the Yelizovo airbase of the Russian Air Force. Authorities reported no immediate casualties or damage.

Russian officials issued a tsunami alert along the Kamchatka coastline, placing services on high alert and advising residents to avoid tsunami-prone areas such as beaches.

This follows a major 8.8 magnitude earthquake on July 30, the strongest ever recorded on the peninsula, after which more than 100 aftershocks above magnitude 5.0 were documented by Russian scientists.
