US Adviser Sets Condition for India to Reduce Tariffs

(MENAFN) India could obtain a 25% cut in American tariffs "tomorrow" if it halts its imports of Russian petroleum, according to White House senior adviser for trade and manufacturing Peter Navarro on Wednesday.

"It's real easy. India can get 25% off tomorrow if it stops buying Russian oil and helping to feed (Russia’s) war machine," he stated in an interview with a news agency.

Navarro emphasized that when India acquires discounted Russian crude and resells it on global markets, Moscow channels that income into its "war machine" to "kill more Ukrainians.”

He directly accused Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi of financing Moscow through oil purchases, saying the money "buys a lot of drones and bombs to kill Ukrainians.”

"The reality is you got to stop India and China from buying Russian oil. You do that tomorrow...the war is over," Navarro declared.

He further argued, “If people just stop buying Russian oil, then it's only a matter of time before (Russian President Vladimir) Putin doesn't have the money to fund that war," adding that the path to peace partly runs through New Delhi.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump’s 50% levy on Indian imports came into effect on Wednesday.

Earlier this month, Washington had enforced a 25% tariff on Indian products, but Trump applied an additional 25% as a punitive measure against India’s continued purchase of discounted Russian crude.
