Pakistani government send its military to help people evacuate from floods

(MENAFN) Pakistan has mobilized its army in northeastern Punjab province to support rescue and relief operations amid a flood emergency caused by heavy rains and India releasing water from overflowing dams.

New Delhi has alerted Islamabad about the “high probability” of increased water flows in the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab rivers.

The army was deployed at the request of the Punjab government to help evacuate residents from districts severely affected by flooding. An official notification confirmed troops are stationed in cities including Lahore, Okara, Faisalabad, and Sialkot.

Pakistan’s Water Resources Ministry warned that a “high flood” could impact several districts as water levels continue to rise in all three rivers. According to the Press Trust of India, New Delhi issued additional alerts to Pakistan on Wednesday regarding the “high probability of flooding in the Tawi river,” noting that continuous rainfall in northern Indian states is forcing the release of excess dam water.

Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority reported that about 150,000 people had already been evacuated to safer areas and urged residents living near rivers to relocate immediately. The authority also cautioned that a new spell of heavy rain is expected to begin on Aug. 29 in various regions.

Both India and Pakistan have faced relentless monsoon rains in recent weeks, with nearly 500 fatalities in Pakistan since Aug. 14—over 400 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province—while total deaths across the country since June 26 have exceeded 800.
