Apple to manufacture iPhone in India despite Trump’s objection
(MENAFN) Apple Inc. is moving forward with plans to expand iPhone production in India, reportedly investing around $2.5 billion, despite US President Donald Trump’s request to limit manufacturing in the country, according to reports.
Indian government sources indicated that Apple aims to produce 60 million iPhones annually in India, up from the current 40 million units.
In May, Trump expressed his opposition directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook, saying, “I said to him [Cook], ‘my friend, I treated you very good. You’re coming here with $500 billion, but now I hear you’re building all over India. I don’t want you building in India.’”
During Apple’s quarterly earnings call the same month, Cook noted that the majority of iPhones sold in the US “will have India as their country of origin.” An Indian official told media outlets that Apple’s expansion plans “will continue as previously envisaged.”
Starting Wednesday, imports from India to the US will face higher costs due to Trump’s 50% tariffs, although smartphones, computers, and other electronics are excluded from these duties.
Apple exported iPhones worth $17 billion from India last year and has established a significant presence in the country’s premium smartphone market. Analysts estimate that with more than 60 million iPhones expected to be sold annually in the US by 2026, Apple will need to nearly double its production in India to meet demand.
